The program FamilyTreeFactory runs on computers that use the operating systems Windows 98, ME, 2000, XP, Vista or 7 (32 and 64 bit) from Microsoft (1). Windows 98 and ME do not provide support for Unicode.
According to user reports, FamilyTreeFactory also runs on Linux and Wine. The print functions do not work, but PDF files can be exported for printing. According to one user report, FamilyTreeFactory also runs well on Mac OS X and Parallels.
The monitor must have a resolution of at least 800 x 600 pixels for the normal display setting of 96 dpi (100 %). For higher dpi values, the monitor resolution must be higher: If the display is set to 144 dpi (150 %) for example, the monitor resolution must be at least 1200 x 900 pixels. The FamilyTreeFactory works well with dpi values in the range from 96 (100 %) to 240 (250 %).
Hint: For higher dpi values Windows Vista and Windows 7 use a dpi scaling, which perhaps results in blurred texts and line graphics on the monitor. If you notice this effect, use the reliable dpi scaling of Windows XP under Vista and 7 too:
Windows Vista: Right-click on an empty space on the desktop and select Properties, Adjust Font Size (DPI), Advanced, checkbox Use Windows XP style DPI scaling.
Windows 7: Right-click on an empty space on the desktop and select Properties, Display, Set custom text size (DPI), checkbox Use Windows XP style DPI scaling. |
Graphic card and monitor must have a color depth of at least 16 bit (HighColor).
A mouse is required for some functions. For using the Help files, the Windows HTML Help system (hhctrl.ocx) must be installed. Pentium or later CPU at least 256 MB of RAM (for in-depth image processing, more system memory is required).
FamilyTreeFactory can be installed on all writable drives that are not write-protected. The directories used for installation are described in the section Program Directories. Starting from a CD is not possible.
Using the program over a network is not recommended, as HTML Help files cannot be used over networks for security reasons. In addition, use over a network can result in input/output errors if write permissions are not correctly configured.
A Windows printer driver must be installed; FamilyTreeFactory needs to access printer driver information (such as the selected paper format and the printer's non-printable margins). The printer driver also serves as a reference raster for calculating coordinates for PDF exports. A printer does not need to be physically present or connected; only an installed driver is necessary. FamilyTreeFactory assumes that the installed printer uses the same resolution in pixels per inch for horizontal and vertical printing.
To view exported PDF files, you will need to have the current version of Adobe Reader or an alternative PDF reader installed and linked to PDF file types. For exporting PDF files, no additional software is necessary. FamilyTreeFactory creates PDF files using integrated software routines. To view exported graphic files in *.bmp, *.jpg, *.gif and *.emf formats, you will need to have appropriate image viewer software installed and linked to the corresponding file type. The default image viewer in older Windows versions is not capable of accurately displaying EMF files.
