FamilyTreeFactory is capable of exporting PDF files with excellent navigation options, which are explained in the following text.
PDF files with an exported graphic:
Bookmarks are output together with the graphic in a PDF file if this has been specified under Exporting PDF Files in the PDF options. Every person has at least one bookmark in the Names section. When record numbers are output, the section Records will also be created. For ancestor trees with output of ancestor numbers, the section Ancestor numbers will also be created. For descendant trees with output of descendant numbers, the section Descendant numbers will also be created. If ID codes are output, the section ID codes will also be created.
The list of bookmarks can be opened in a PDF reader on the left side of the window:

Part of the list after opening the sections looks like this:

The sections are sorted numerically by record numbers or alphabetically by names. If the sections Ancestor numbers, Descendant numbers or ID codes are present, they will be sorted alphanumerically.
Note 1: If numeric ID codes are used, the correct order can be obtained despite alphanumeric sorting: Numeric ID codes are saved with leading zeros and in the Treeview Options, Box Content tab, Output Personal Data, Special Format Options, the checkbox ID code: Output without leading zeros is selected. This option is also taken into account for outputting file cards. |
In the Names section, dates of birth will not be shown for persons with active data privacy settings.
If the list is not wide enough to show an entire entry, an information window will open (at the top in yellow in the example).
Click the left mouse button to display the corresponding person box in the main window. It is usually positioned in the top left corner, but this also depends on how far the visible image section can be scrolled.
If the graphic contains duplicates with cross-references, the cross-reference text fields can be used as links. Left-click on a cross-reference text field to display the corresponding person box in the main window.
Segments in person boxes with cross-reference texts that are used as links (the buttons are highlighted in color for the purpose of clarity, this is not the case in the actual PDF files):

If a person box has references to multiple duplicates, each text segment can be used as an individual link.
Note 2: Within the graphic, there are no links for navigating back and forth between godparents/godchildren and witnesses/married persons. For this to work, you will need to integrate a PDF card index and navigate within the graphic using file cards. The file cards provide this functionality. |
PDF files with an exported card index:
Bookmarks are output together with the card index in a PDF file if this has been specified under Export in the PDF options. Every file card has at least one bookmark in the Names section. If document files are attached, the section Documents will also be created. The Bookmark lists are arranged in the same way as in PDF files with an exported graphic (see above). Certain text fields on the file cards can be used as navigation buttons in addition to the bookmarks. Every row that refers to a relative contained in the card index can be clicked to jump to the corresponding file card:

If relatives are not included in the card index (such as if only visible records in a given treeview were exported to a PDF card index), this can be noted in the relative line with the remark Not present in the card index. For this, the checkbox Note, if a relative is not included in the card index in the Export Card Index As PDF File dialog must be selected.
Also texts with mutual references to persons that may not be relatives, such as godparents/godchildren or witnesses/married persons, can be used as links to quickly navigate to the file cards in question.
If document files have been attached automatically to the PDF file (not possible under Windows 98 and ME), at the end of the card index file cards have be added, on which all attached document files are listed. This list includes a symbol button (double-click) for every document file for opening the document file in the standard application installed under Windows (this function is not supported by all PDF readers). In addition, to every document file the persons are listed on whose file cards the document is mentioned. There is a mutual linkage between the file cards of the persons and the file cards of the document files for a fast navigation: You can click on the mentioned document on the file card of the person to jump to the file card of the document file. And you can click on the name on the file card of the document file to jump to the file card of the person.
PDF files with an exported graphic and an included card index:
These PDF files contain bookmarks for the person boxes in a graphic and for the file cards. The bookmarks can be found in the sections for Graphic and Card index. The sections Graphic and Card index contain the subfield Names and may contain the subfields Records, Ancestor numbers, Descendant numbers, ID codes and/or Documents.

The Bookmark lists are arranged in the same way as in PDF files with an exported graphic (see above). Certain text fields on the file cards and in the person boxes can be used as navigation buttons in addition to the bookmarks. For cross-reference text fields in person boxes, see the section PDF files with an exported graphic above; for relative references in file cards, see the section PDF files with an exported card index above.
PDF files with an exported graphic and an included card index also allow you to jump between person boxes and the card index. The name text fields are used as buttons here:

The areas with name text in person boxes (highlighted here for clarity) serve as buttons for jumping to the file cards.
This image shows an example of a corresponding button on a file card:

If persons are not included in the graphic (such as if all records in an open family were exported to the included card index and not just the members of the currently-displayed tree), this can be noted in the title row of the file card with the remark Not present in the tree. For this, the check box Note, if a person is not included in the treeview in the Export Card Index As PDF File dialog must be selected.
If a person box contains a note that data have not been output (occupation, note, sources, partnerships and children or parents of partners, see Treeview Options, Box Content tab), these note text fields also will serve as links to jump to the file card. The data that was not output in the person boxes can be read there.
Using the Search function in Adobe Reader:
You can search for persons in Adobe (1) Reader by using the Search function: Enter a piece of information about the person, such as the given name or a place. Reader will show you a list of search results. You can click on items in the search results to jump to the corresponding person box, where the word you searched for will be highlighted.
Information about nominal size reductions when exporting:
If an export to PDF causes the graphic to be reduced in nominal size, this will be noted in the document properties of the PDF file. You can open the Document Properties in your reader and read the section Description, Subject to see the factor by which you will need to enlarge the output to obtain the original size.
Strengths and weaknesses of various PDF readers for Windows:
In addition to the widely-used Adobe Reader, you can use other PDF readers that are also free: These include Foxit Reader from Foxit Software (2), eXPert Reader from Visagesoft (3), PDF-XChange Viewer from Tracker Software (4) and Brava! Reader from Informative Graphics (5). The following table shows the features of different PDF readers:

+) PDF files for Adobe Reader 6 were exported with the PDF option Compatible with old Adobe Reader 6 under Windows 98 and ME. See the section Exporting PDF Files.
*) For enlarged depictions (scale >> 100%), the buttons in the person boxes on the far right are not recognized.
**) Adobe Reader cancels a print job above a maximum number of pixel coordinates. A detailed explanation of this can be found in the section Printing PDFs Using Large Format Printers.
***) Bookmarks are not displayed.
Note 3: Be sure to use the current version of Adobe (1) Reader; functionality was not tested for older versions. For Windows 98 and ME, use Adobe Reader 6. For Windows 2000, XP, Vista and 7, use Adobe Reader 9. |
Note 4: The current Foxit Reader Version 3.1.4 (build 1125) is suitable for large PDF files only with limitations; the display an the monitor works well, but printing on a large format printer is unreliable: Sometimes the text in Free Text Objects is missing, sometimes the lines (box frames, connection lines and Free Geo Objects) are missing. However, this version can open file attachments like document files. |
