This editor is used to enter and format text for Free Text Objects. The editing functions are based on simple word processing functions. The text can contain as many lines as necessary.

The editor uses dropdown selection lists for font, font size and font color. Three buttons activate the bold, italic and underline styles. Changes affect the selected text. New text is formatted in the same way as the text to its left.

The horizontal alignment within the edges of the Free Text Object can be set using three buttons to left, centered or right. This alignment always affects all lines.

Right-clicking in the text area opens a menu with commonly-used text editing functions:

In addition to the menu, standard keystroke combinations can also be used: Ctrl+Z for Undo, Ctrl+X for Cut, Ctrl+C for Copy, Ctrl+V for Paste, Del for Delete and Ctrl+A for Select All.

You can copy text from other applications to this editor. Because the FamilyTreeFactory uses Windows RTF libraries and Word uses special RTF libraries, it is not certain that the formatting will be retained for all outputs (monitor, printer, PDF file, etc.). Images cannot be inserted into Free Text Objects. For images, use Free Image Objects.

You can use so-called Text Variables in the text, which will be replaced at the output by currently valid values. The defined text variables are contained in the dropdown list Select and insert text variable. Put the cursor in the text area to the position where the text variable should be inserted. Then select a text variable from the dropdown list. For example if you want to output the date of output in a Free Text Object, use the text variable <%Date%>.

The following table mentions all defined text variables:

The Cancel button closes the editor without making changes. The text in the Free Text Object is not changed.

The OK button saves the formatted text in the Free Text Object and closes the editor.

Note 1: FamilyTreeFactory uses the RTF format internally for formatted text. The RTF library of Windows 98 and ME uses a different method for horizontal alignment and line breaks than newer Windows versions. For Windows 98 and ME, the editor provides two radio buttons for setting its behavior.

Note 2: The RTF libraries of older Windows versions cannot output symbol fonts. This is valid for example for the symbol font 'Wingdings', but also for the symbol font 'Genealog-Symbols' of the FamilyTreeFactory. If you want to use symbols in a Free Text Object, check the output.
