FamilyTreeFactory allows you to print large graphics on multiple pages that can be glued together if a single page is not large enough for the entire graphic.
This option can also be used with large format printers. If the available roll width and/or length are not sufficient, you can glue together strips printed on large format printers.
Note regarding an exception with the use of roll paper: The available roll length (length of the entire rolled-up paper on a new roll) is different from the maximum paper length allowed by your printer driver. If the maximum length used by your printer driver is not long enough, you can specify that the graphic be printed on multiple pages (left-to-right in landscape format or top-to-bottom in portrait format). This can be done in the Treeview Options, Printer Page tab. FamilyTreeFactory will print multiple "pages" that continue in the direction of the roll paper with no interruptions. As the graphic is printed on a single piece of paper in this way, you will not need to glue sheets together. An example follows:
- The graphic is 1000 inch wide and 35 inch high. - The available roll length of a new complete roll is 1800 inch. - The maximum paper dimension allowed by the printer driver is 600 inch.
For this, select Landscape format, 1 page vertical (top-to-bottom), 2 pages horizontal (left-to-right) and set a user-defined paper format in the driver measuring 500 inch wide and 35 inch high. A single strip will be printed that is 1000 inch long; no gluing is necessary.
Restriction: This method works only on two conditions: 1. The printer must print the pages 1, 2, ... from left to right so that for example the direct changeover goes from page 1, right end, to page 2, left beginning. If the pages are printed from right to left, the print order of the pages also must be turned over; this is not possible at every printer. 2. The printer driver must be adjusted so that the non-printable margins are zero at the direct changeover. Otherwise there would be an interruption. This is not possible at every printer. You can check the adjustment of the non-printable margins: Help/Info menu, Printer and Monitor Info. |
If you want to print multiple pages on large format printers and glue them together, read the sections Direct Printing Using Large Format Printers and Indirect Printing Using a Print File. The information included there also applies in this case.
If using a standard format office printer, the above sections about using large format printers are not relevant. If using US B format printers with roll paper, the instructions for large format printers generally apply.
The most important task is to define how many pages horizontal (left-to-right) and vertical (top-to-bottom) the printed graphic should take up. There are three ways of doing this:
Method 1:
Specify the number of pages horizontal (left-to-right) and vertical (top-to-bottom) yourself: Treeview Options, Printer Page tab, Orientation and Number of Pages. You can also change the options Landscape/Portrait to create a paper format that comes as close as possible to the desired size. To make gluing easier, you can also specify a Print Overlap. After closing the Treeview Options dialog by clicking OK, you can see how the graphic fits the pages in the Print Preview window (File menu). You can also specify that Page numbers be displayed in the Print Preview window.
This first method is generally used in combination with the print justification Use paper format for size. The expected print size can be seen in the Print Preview Information Window. The resultant Factor of size changing and the resultant font sizes created by adjusting the graphic to fit the paper format are displayed there as well.
Method 2:
Let FamilyTreeFactory calculate how many pages are needed. For this, the Print justification may not be set to Use paper format for size so that the size is not adjusted to fit the paper. For example, you can set the Print justification to Center horizontally and vertically. The Number of pages horizontal and vertical should initially be set to 1. You can set a Print overlap as desired. Close the Treeview Options dialog by clicking OK and enter Print Preview mode. This may then determine that a single page is not large enough for your graphic. The actual number of required pages will be calculated and you will be asked if you want to accept these settings in the Treeview Options. Accept the suggested settings and look at the result in Print Preview mode.
With the second method, the graphic is not fit to the paper format, meaning that the size of the graphic and text remains unchanged. You can also change the options Landscape/Portrait here to create a paper format that comes as close as possible to the desired graphic size, which will minimize the number of pages needed.
A total paper format will generally be calculated that is slightly larger than the graphic. There will be a free unprinted margin outside the graphic. To use this margin to increase the graphic size slightly, go to the Treeview Options, Printer Page tab, and set the Print justification to Use paper format for size. Leave the number of pages horizontal and vertical unchanged. To perfectly fit the graphic to the calculated total paper format, recreate the graphic with the option Automatic width/height turned on.
Method 3:
If a large graphic is printed on multiple pages, person boxes would normally have page breaks (glued sections) running through them. To avoid this, go to the Treeview Options, Printer Page tab, and set the Print justification to Print at top left. Then click the button Don't Split Boxes. This automatically adjusts the number of pages, the Print overlaps and the Optional margins so that the page breaks are located exactly between the person boxes, so that the person boxes are not split on different pages. After this, do not make any other changes to settings. Close the Treeview Options dialog by clicking OK and the graphic will be redrawn. Finally, you can use Print Preview and the functions available there to get a detailed look at the results. If you are satisfied with the results, you can print the graphic.
The graphic is not fit to the paper format with the third method either, meaning that the size of the graphic and text remains unchanged. You can also change the options Landscape/Portrait to minimize the number of pages needed. After changing the Landscape/Portrait settings, the function Don't Split Boxes must be performed again.
If you are satisfied with the results in Print Preview, you can print the graphic. After performing the Don't Split Boxes function, no other settings may be changed before printing. If you need to make changes to any settings, the Don't Split Boxes function must be performed again.
Due to the adjustments made to the graphic within the total paper format, different margins will result on all 4 sides of the graphic to the edge of the paper, which should be cut off. To make this easier, print a Graphic frame as a cutting guide. A gray, narrow line is sufficient for this purpose: Treeview Options, Graphic Format tab, Graphic Frame, mark the On checkbox, set Width to the minimum, select the Color radio button, set the Color button to gray.
For all three methods, the following is true:
If the print overlap is at least 0.2 inch, the margins to be covered by the overlapping page will contain page numbers and the page to be attached in a light gray color to make gluing the pages together easier. The pages are glued in rows from the top left to the bottom right.
