Note 1: FamilyTreeFactory uses unique partnership and child numbers, which need to be set on this tab before creating records for partners and children. For this, the Partner x and Child x file card tabs as well as the For the partner, this is the partnership no. [x]. Subsequent changes can be made using the Change Order of Partners/Children... button. The orders of partnerships and children are not based on the order of entry, but rather on the corresponding partner or child number. |
There are two areas on the Partners and Children sub-tab for creating new records for relatives: Partner and Child. This automatically creates the appropriate relationship structure. The Create button in the relationship area allows you to create a new record for relatives after entering a person's surname and given name, as well as a maiden name and gender if necessary. Before creating a partner record, the status of the partnership should also be determined. To enter the data after clicking on the Create button, the new record is displayed at the Personal Data tab, sub-tab Attributes and Events.
Note 2: If a treeview is shown and a new record for a new person has been created, the new person does not automatically appear in the treeview, even if he/she is expected there according to the relationships. New persons only can appear in a treeview when the treeview is created newly. Only when creating a treeview the relationship structure is found out and represented in the graphic. |
Changes of partnership data are marked on the file card tabs Partner x by an asterisk *; in addition changes of the status of the partnership and of marriage and divorce data cause the output of the word changed in the title bar of the window. Changes of child data are marked on the file card tabs Child x by a degree sign °. Because every child belongs to a certain partnership, a degree sign ° is output on the appropriate file card tab Partner x, too. Therefore on the file card tabs of partners two signs can be output: The asterisk * for partnership data changed and the degree sign ° for child data changed.
If a record already exists for a relative, the button will no longer be called Create, but rather Edit. Clicking this button displays the relative's record at the first tab, Personal Data, sub-tab Attributes and Events. The navigation buttons with arrows are active and can be used for quick navigation within the relationship structures. This does not navigate to the Attributes and Events sub-tab for the relative's record. Instead, the Partners and Children sub-tab remains in the foreground, allows you to continue navigating with the navigation arrows. However, this navigation method is only useful for scrolling through a short range of records. For large ranges of records, you can use the Select Record... button or the Search for Person in Treeview... function in the Treeview menu.
You can include data about Marriage or Divorce in the Partner area. These data are not saved until the Save Record button has been pressed. Adding a partner record with the Create button will not save these data.
If you only have single marriage data without differentiation between a civil and a religious wedding, mark the Single checkbox and enter the date and/or place of marriage in the upper data fields. If there are assigned data for a civil and/or religious marriage ceremony, mark the Civil and religious checkbox. Civil marriage data (marked with a C) are entered in the upper data fields and religious marriage data (marked with an R) are entered into the lower data fields.
Marriage data includes a data field for Witnesses. Up to nine witnesses can be documented using two different methods: either by entering the record numbers of the witnesses or by entering names. A comma or semicolon must be placed between the witnesses, depending on the settings under Program Options, Miscellaneous tab. Record numbers must be entered as a number with no spaces. Entries that are not entirely composed of numbers will be treated as names. It is recommended that you create data records for all witnesses and simply enter their record numbers. This will allow you to use both methods if you want to export a Gedcom file to import into another program. A name can be found in a record, but a record number cannot be determined from a name. Select the option for Gedcom export in the Gedcom Options, Witness Coding tab.
Parents of illegitimate children are given the partnership status not married and no marriage data are entered. In general, non-married partnerships are treated as marriages but are given the partnership status not married. For example, if a person has had a child in a unmarried relationship between two marriages, the actual marriages must be given the partnership numbers 1 and 3. The unmarried couple is given partnership number 2. This allows the child to be shown in the graphic.
Next to the Create button, the relationship areas for partners and children contain the button Select..., which is only active if a partner or child has not yet been entered. Instead of creating a new person, you can select an existing person as a partner or child. Clicking the button opens the Select Person dialog. When using this function, be careful if you create multiple relationships by selecting a person for which a relationship already exists. These types of relationship structures can cause multiple boxes to be created in a graphic for a person, which are called duplicates. These may be documented in the boxes with cross-references to the duplicates. Specify whether cross-references are included in the output in the Treeview Options, Box Content tab. For example, a partnership between great-grandchildren of a single ancestor will be shown in two places; both great-grandchildren will be shown a second time as the partner of the other great-grandchild. A cross-reference to the duplicates can be output in their boxes. In the Treeview Options, Graphic Content tab, Tree Structure, Orientation and relatives, you can specify whether descendants of these types of partnerships should be shown in multiple locations, below all duplicates or just once below the partner boxes that appear first in the tree structure. You can document these types of structures in ancestor trees with cross-references to duplicates in the same way.
If a record already exists for a partner or a child, the Select... button will be replaced by the Part... button. The Part function removes the relationship status after confirming. This may cause a person to lose all relationships within the family file.
Note 3: If the output of button hints has been activated in the Program Options, Toolbar tab, also in this dialog hints will be shown for the Create/Edit and Select/Part buttons as well as for the navigation buttons. |
