The Personal Data tab is for entering data for family members. The name and gender of the person is entered in the top part of the tab. The lower area manages additional data about the person in sub-tabs.
In general, it is enough to enter a surname, given name(s) and gender. The gender must only be entered for the 1st person in a new family file and for children. When father/mother records are added, the record will automatically be set to male/female. When partner records are added, they are automatically set to the opposite gender. The gender of partners and parents can only be changed if you unlock the radio button with the Lock button. Caution: Depending on the gender check settings (Program Options, Integrity Check tab), the integrity of the data can be damaged by changing genders.
Nobility titles and differing maiden names are entered in the surname entry fields. Academic titles are not inserted in the name fields, but rather in the Attributes and Events sub-tab in the Title field. The entry fields for surnames and maiden names contain a dropdown list with all surnames that have already been saved in the family file. Alphabetical sorting of multipart surnames and maiden names is performed in accordance with the settings in the Program Options on the Basic Configuration tab. The names can be sorted according to spelling or according to context (for details, see the Appendix in the section Alphabetic Sorting in Lists). If context sorting is activated, the part of a multipart name used for alphabetic sorting in lists is shown under the entry fields for surname and maiden name. This display is constantly refreshed while you enter the name, which may be confusing. It may be easier to finish entering the name before looking at this display and making any necessary changes.
In the entry field for given name(s), you can mark one of several given names as the preferred given name using the symbols ">" and "<", for example Alfred >August< Friedrich. If set accordingly in the Treeview Options, Box Content tab, using these marks will automatically underline the preferred given name in the given name output (e.g. Alfred August Friedrich). This is often the style used in civil records. If you limit the output of given names to preferred given names in the Treeview Options, Box Content tab, underlining will not be performed. If multiple given names are entered and none is marked as the preferred given name, the first given name will be considered the preferred given name. For this reason, first given names and single given names do not have to be marked as the preferred given name.
