Note 1: At first the PDF Options dialog appears at the call of this function. The PDF Options dialog is described in the section Exporting PDF files. |

This function creates file cards for all persons in the currently open file or all persons contained in the currently viewed tree. The cards include all saved personal data, including photos. If the exported records are limited to those displayed in the current tree, the active data privacy settings for the tree can be used. This can be configured in the Treeview Options, Box Content tab. If all records in the currently open family or Gedcom file are exported, person-based data privacy can be used. This can be configured in the Program Options, Data Privacy tab.
The card index can be exported to a PDF file separately (use the dialog in the Personal Data menu) or together with a graphic (use the dialog when exporting a graphic to PDF in the Treeview menu). The card index can then be printed out with a PDF reader if desired.
You can determine the content, sorting, paper format, orientation, text distance from the paper edges and basic font size. Mark the checkbox Automatically open exported PDF file to cause the file to be opened immediately after creation in the installed PDF reader. This checkbox and the Cancel button are only shown if the dialog has been opened from the Personal Data menu, meaning that a separate card file is being exported.
Note 2: On file cards of godparents the output 'Godparent of [Godchild]' will only appear, if the godparent is saved in the personal data of the godchild with his or her record number and not with his or her name. This applies to witnesses analogous. |
If you would like to output an image file on the cover page, it must be saved in the directory (or subdirectory) that is specified in the Program Options on the Directories tab.
The option Document files: Attach and link internally is of special importance. Through this the document files mentioned on the file cards are attached to the PDF file. In this case at the end of the card index file cards will be added, on which all attached document files are listed. This list includes a symbol button (double-click) for every document file for opening the document file in the standard application installed under Windows (this function is not supported by all PDF readers). In addition, to every document file the persons are listed on whose file cards the document is mentioned. There is a mutual linkage between the file cards of the persons and the file cards of the document files for a fast navigation: You can click on the mentioned document on the file card of the person to jump to the file card of the document file. And you can click on the name on the file card of the document file to jump to the file card of the person. Every document file is attached only once even if it is mentioned with several persons. The option Attach document files and build links to them is less useful if the card index shall be printed. This option is rather suitable for the creation of archive PDF files as described in the section Creating Archive PDF Files.
Note 3: Under Windows 98 and ME document files can not be attached and linked automatically using the option Document files: Attach and link internally. However, you can summarize several document files without any link in a ZIP archive and attach this ZIP archive manually; Details can be found in the section Exporting PDF Files. |
At the option Document files: Link externally links to external document files are provided in the PDF file. So the linked document files are not attached but the links point to external files. A click on a document file name on the file card of the person opens the linked document file in the standard application installed under Windows (this function is not supported by all PDF readers). The links can be saved with absolute or relative paths or without paths; the user is prompted to select one method. Absolute paths are recommended if the PDF card index is used only on the same computer. Relative paths are recommended if the PDF card index and the document files are used on a removable storage device with a changing drive letter. Links without paths are recommended if the files shall be sent; the receiver then must save the PDF card index and the linked document files in an arbitrary, common directory.
If you sort the file cards by ID code or by ancestor/descendant numbers, some records may not contain this information. These records are output at the end and are sorted by name.
If in the previous PDF Options dialog the checkbox Insert bookmarks was activated, the PDF file includes bookmarks for the file cards. The bookmarks can be sorted by name or, if desired, by record numbers, ID codes or ancestor/descendant numbers. The navigation options in PDF files are discussed in detail in the section Functions in PDF Files.
In the area Orientation the checkbox New card per person allows to determine, that a new file card is started for every person. This is usual for file cards in landscape 5x8 inch or A4 format. If this checkbox is not marked, the cards are printed continuously. With that, paper can be saved at the printout, for example in the portrait Letter or A4 format.
The output language of file cards is set to English as default. A different language can be set by using the FamilyTreeFactory.lng output language file that contains the languages to be used. FamilyTreeFactory automatically reads the available languages from the file and lets you select the language from a dropdown list. If this dialog is shown because you integrate a card index at the export of a graphic, the output language of the treeview is selected automatically. The setting of the output language only applies to the output of file cards and does not affect the user interface.
Hint: You can change language elements in the output language file yourself, add new languages or even adjust English elements to fit your needs. In the Tools menu, select Output Language File Editor. |
