In the Dialog Character Set area, specify whether the dialog for selecting character set should be displayed when importing.

The dialog for a qualified selection of the character set is automatically displayed if the converter cannot recognize the character set by itself. You can specify here that the dialog should be shown every time. This option can be helpful if the CHAR tag contains a known character set, but the set is wrong for the file. Details regarding the selection of a character set can be found in the section Import Gedcom Files.

Note 1: If a UNICODE Gedcom file is recognized, the dialog is never opened, even if the checkbox is selected. Automatic recognition of UNICODE files based on special characters is highly reliable.

The complete list Handling of Special Gedcom Tags and Data:

Several options in the list for the area Handling of Special Gedcom Tags and Data are explained as follows:

You can correct errors in Gedcom records with the checkbox Fix incorrect orders of spouses/children to match the dates of marriage/birth. If the orders of marriages and children do not match the chronological orders of marriages or births, this option can adjust the orders to match the date entries. Marriages are rearranged so that the order of the list matches the chronological order of marriage dates. Incorrect orders of children are rearranged in the same way. It is recommended that you first accept the data without this option selected. Then, you can look in the log to see if the integrity check has found any problems with marriage or birth orders. After that, you can decide if you want to correct the original data in the genealogy program from which the Gedcom file was exported or if you would like to fix the orders using this option.

Note 2: Even if a single marriage or birth date is missing, the program cannot be sure to correctly adjust the orders. It can only be ensured that the orders match the existing data.

It should also be noted that no marriage data can be saved for non-married partnerships. This means that their chronological positions in a sequence of multiple partnerships cannot be checked.

If a Gedcom file for a child includes multiple parents pairs (such as biological and adoptive parents), one of these parents pairs must be selected for importing into FamilyTreeFactory records. This selection can be performed automatically using three options: if the real parents are clearly recognizable, if parents are marked with a _PRIMARY tag, or if the first parents pair should be selected. It can also be specified whether the non-selected parents should be added to the note. If no checkbox for automatic parent selection is marked or if the conditions of the selected option are not met, a dialog will be displayed for manual selection of the parents.

The option Married name and maiden name... should be swapped is used if a Gedcom file contains married names and not maiden names in the "1 NAME" tag instead of the usual format. In these cases, the maiden names are saved in user-defined tags. Switching these names will cause the names to be imported into the correct data fields in FamilyTreeFactory.

The save formats for OCCU and EMIG sub-tags (date, place) refer to the transfer of occupation and emigration date and place entries that may be found in a Gedcom file in the OCCU and EMIG sub-tags DATE and PLAC. FamilyTreeFactory can import the occupation date and place information in the data field for occupation and add the emigration date and place information to the note. The date and place entries thereby become an integrated part of the occupation and emigration data and cannot be individually edited for output or translated into one of the available output languages. For this reason, the date format and language for later output should be determined when importing.

FamilyTreeFactory writes an occupation to the occupation field as follows: [Date] [Occupation] in [Place], such as '1894 baker in Berlin'. Emigration data are added to the note as follows: [Date] emigration to [Place], such as '1895 emigration to Boston, USA'. The format of the date output is based on the format selected in the Date format dropdown list. The words 'in' and 'to' are translated using the output language file selected in the Language list. The output of comma-separated place levels is selected in the Comma-separated place levels dropdown list.

The complete list Log Contents and Level of Detail:

In the Log Contents and Level of Detail area, you can make settings for the conversion log. Conversion of a Gedcom file to FamilyTreeFactory records always produces a log. This includes both the expected results as well as data that caused problems. The log can be viewed, copied and saved.

The items included in the log as well as the level of detail can be selected from the list. Levels 2 to 5 allow you to check the source data and correct any entry errors in the data exported from the genealogy program.

Level 7 produces very long logs, as a row is created for every person for reference between the Gedcom INDI records and the FamilyTreeFactory record numbers. This reference may be needed if looking for complex errors, but is usually not necessary.

Note 3: Unreadable or invalid date text phrases are explained in the Appendix in the section Date Formats in FamilyTreeFactory Records and in Gedcom Files. Logs with a content/level of detail of 2 or greater include a reference to every date text phrase. In addition, you can also use the function Search for Records with Certain Attributes, Search for Records with Date Text Phrases in the Personal Data menu to check data after importing a Gedcom file.
