Marriage Data Coding

There are three methods for coding marriage data: User-defined attributes, user-defined MARR types and user-defined tag. The dialog shows sample lines of a family record in a Gedcom file for each method.

Finally, specify the use for importing and exporting.

Additional details about marriage data coding and conversion can be found in the Appendix in the section Details for the Gedcom Conversion.

Hint: To set the Gedcom converter to use the coding method of a specific genealogy program, start by determining whether the genealogy program is capable of managing separate data for civil and religious marriages and, if so, how they are coded. Export a test Gedcom file with the genealogy program that contains a test married couple with data defined for both civil and a religious marriages (date and place of each). This file will be opened in FamilyTreeFactory. Look at the display list of the family record to determine which method is used for coding. Based on the known marriage data of the test couple, you can easily determine which of the three methods shown in the dialog is correct. You can then specify the attribute type, the MARR type or the tag. Enter the attribute type, the MARR type or the tag in the corresponding data field.

Configuration examples:

These examples are based on the hint above. The test Gedcom files contain the test married couple 'John Samplefam' and 'Elisabeth Samplefam, born Samplemiss' with the marriage data 'civil 03/02/1920 Boston, MA' and 'religious 03/03/1920 Cambridge, MA'.

Move the converter dialog to the left on your display and scroll the display list in the center with the scroll bar until all of the marriage data can be seen. Then, open the dialog Gedcom Options by clicking on the button Change Gedcom Options... in the converter dialog. Select the Marriage Data Coding tab and move this dialog to the right on your display so that you can see the corresponding data in both dialogs.

Examples for all methods of marriage data coding are shown:

User-defined attributes:

1.) Open the test Gedcom file and look for the family record for the marriage of John Samplefam and Elisabeth Samplemiss in the center list (highlighted in yellow). As the names of the married couple are not directly named, searching for a specific couple in a large file can be difficult. If this is the case, look for the individual record of one spouse in the left list and double-click on the line '1 FAMS @...@' to display the referenced family record in the center list (highlighted in red '1 FAMS @F1@' ---> '0 @F1@)FAM'.

2.) In the family record, look to see if the marriage data '03/02/1920 Boston, MA' and '03/03/1920 Cambridge, MA' are shown separately or highlighted. This is the case in the lines '2 DATE 2 Mar 1920' and 2 PLAC Boston, MA' as well as '2 DATE 3 Mar 1920' and '2 PLAC Cambridge, MA'. The month number '03' is replaced by the English month abbreviation 'Mar' (highlighted in green). These lines are each assigned the line '1 EVEN' above them. The assignment is determined by the initial number being greater by 1: 2... is assigned to 1... The lines '1 EVEN' also have another line '2 TYPE...', which differentiates the contained data into 'CivilMarriage' and 'ReligiousMarriage'. Other words could be used; only the structure here is important.

3.) Click on the button Change Gedcom Options... to open the dialog Gedcom Options. Select the Marriage Data Coding tab:

Select the coding method of the three whose separated marriage data have the same structure as in the test Gedcom file, in this case two blocks of four lines each: '1 EVEN ...', '2 TYPE ...', '2 DATE ...' and '2 PLAC ...'. In this case, the method is user-defined attributes. This is because there are two line blocks (highlighted in green). The differentiation between civil and religious marriage is based on the lines '2 TYPE [entry field]', into which the types that were used in the test Gedcom file must now be entered. In this case, this will be 'CivilMarriage' and 'ReligiousMarriage'.

5.) Finally, the method determined must be selected for import (highlighted in blue).

6.) Click the button OK to save the Gedcom Options and close the dialog.

7.) In the converter dialog, click the button New Conversion.

8.) In the right display list for FamilyTreeFactory records, you can now see the separated marriage data used in FamilyTreeFactory (highlighted in blue).

User-defined MARR types:

1.) Open the test Gedcom file and look for the family record for the marriage of John Samplefam and Elisabeth Samplemiss in the center list (highlighted in yellow). As the names of the married couple are not directly named, searching for a specific couple in a large file can be difficult. The religious marriage data are entered in a user-defined tag, in this case '_CHURCH'. Other words could be used here; only the structure is important.

3.) Click on the button Change Gedcom Options... to open the dialog Gedcom Options. Select the Marriage Data Coding tab:

Select the coding method of the three whose separated marriage data have the same structure as in the test Gedcom file, in this case one block of three lines: '1 MARR ...', '2 DATE ...' and '2 PLAC ...' as well as an additional block of three lines: '1 _CHURCH...', '2 DATE ...' and '2 PLAC ...'. This is the case in the method user-defined tag, because the method uses the line block '1 MARR ...', '2 DATE ...' and '2 PLAC ...' as well as an additional block '1 [entry field] ...', '2 DATE ...' and '2 PLAC ...' (highlighted in green). The religious marriage data are marked with the line '1 [entry field]', into which the tag that was used in the test Gedcom file must now be entered. In this case, this will be '_CHURCH'.

5.) Finally, the method determined must be selected for import (highlighted in blue).

6.) Click the button OK to save the Gedcom Options and close the dialog.

7.) In the converter dialog, click the button New Conversion.

8.) In the right display list for FamilyTreeFactory records, you can now see the separated marriage data used in FamilyTreeFactory (highlighted in blue).
