In the Tree Structure area, you can define the maximum number of generations, which is the maximum number of rows of person boxes displayed in the graphic. Graphics can contain up to 60 rows (generations). However, in the treeviews grandparents' descendant tree and great-grandparents' descendant tree 1 row and in the treeview relatives tree 2 rows are used for internal purposes.

The orientation of the tree structure can be selected for ancestor trees and descendant trees in the Orientation and relatives list. The orientation Oldest generation at the top creates trees which are understood intuitively because the progress proceeds from the top left to the bottom right as in the case of the western writing and reading.

The relatives to be included in the tree structure can be selected in the Orientation and relatives list. By default (Default button) all relatives are included except the siblings of the ancestors. Some relatives may be excluded or included for special purposes.

The Orientation and relatives list includes the following checkboxes:

For ancestor trees, a checkbox determines if the siblings of the primary person are to be included in the output. In this case, the siblings would be shown next to each other in the chronological order of birth. The automatically-created graphic title lists all siblings with their preferred given names before listing the birth surname of the primary person.

For ancestor trees, you can specify whether the fathers, the ancestors of the fathers, the siblings of the fathers, the mother, the ancestors of the mother and the siblings of the mothers should be included in the tree structure.

If a person is present more than once in an ancestor tree, meaning that duplicates are present, the ancestors of this person are usually only included once in the output from the duplicate appearing first in the tree structure. Mark the checkbox Ancestors from all duplicates to show the ancestors from each of the duplicates.

For descendant trees, you can specify if all partners or only those with children should be included. Furthermore you can specify if all sons, daughters and/or children with unknown gender should be included or if only those persons should be included whose maiden names match the surname of the primary person (name lineage). Names are considered equivalent if only a part of a double name matches the primary name or if gender-specific nobility titles match the core of the family name. For the treeviews grandparents' descendant tree, great-grandparents' descendant tree and relatives tree, the above-mentioned setting has no effect. These types of trees generally have different names.

You can also specify whether partners of the sons, daughters and/or children with unknown gender as well as descendants of sons and/or daughters should be included.

If a person is present more than once in a descendant tree, meaning that duplicates are present, the descendants of this person are usually only included once in the output from the duplicate appearing first in the tree structure. Mark the checkbox Descendants from all duplicates to show the descendants from each of the duplicates. For the treeview relatives tree, the above-mentioned setting has no effect.

Finally, the last checkbox for descendant trees determines whether descendants should be limited to those that have reached a certain age. For example, this can be used to exclude children who died young. If "stillborn" is saved as the date of death for a child, this means that a child reached the age of 0 years. If "child/infant" is saved, this means that the child died before completing his/her 8th year of life. For the treeview relatives tree, the above-mentioned setting has no effect.

Note 1: Limiting options for the consideration of relatives do not apply to the creation of relatives trees.

In the list Excluded Persons, you can specify persons that are to be excluded from the planned tree structure. The Hide function works as if the persons were not saved at all. The status excluded is not saved in the personal data, but in the treeview options in the treeview file. This means that you can create various treeviews from the same personal data. You can exclude an unlimited number of persons.

Note 2: The function Add will exclude a person. The function Remove will include a person. Add and Remove refer to the list of excluded persons, not to the tree structure.

This option also allows you to exclude entire branches of a tree structure by ruling out the person(s) at the origin of the branch. If you want to show a married couple in a descendant tree but you want to exclude their children and further descendants, you need to add all of the children to the list.

Hint 1: You can add persons to this list from the treeview as well. Right-click on the person box and select the option Exclude person from the menu.

To be safe, the Excluded Persons list can be automatically cleared if the checkbox Automatically clear the list if the tree type or the primary person is changed is marked. If you would like to retain the contents of the list for other tree types and/or primary persons, remove the mark from this checkbox.

The contents of the Excluded persons list are not saved if the treeview options are saved in a treeview options profile or as a preset.

In the Background area, the color of the background can be adjusted.

Note 3: The background color is output throughout the entire printable area and not just below the graphic. If this is not desired, you can set the background color to white and use a Free Geo Object (rectangle) with a solid fill for the background.

A background image can also be selected. You can specify either a texture or a symbol for the background image. The texture option fills the entire background of the graphic with no empty spaces. Starting from the top left, the selected image is inserted once or several times. The image may be cut off at the bottom. The symbol option causes the image to be inserted into the graphic once or several times so that no part of the image is cut off. In general, there are gaps between an image and the graphic margin or between multiple images. At active symbol output a deactivated checkbox Also under the graphic margins will cause the background image to be output only in the area of the tree with the person boxes.

The Number of images side by side (in a horizontal row) can be set between 1 and 20. The number of images in a vertical column is automatically calculated based on the proportions of the graphic and the background image.

Select a background image by clicking the button Select Image File.... The file that contains the background image must be located in the main directory for image files selected in the Program Options dialog, Directories tab.

Hint 2: You can also drag image files from Windows Explorer with the mouse into the preview area.

If Symbol is selected and if the Number of images side by side is set to 1, the background image can be adjusted in a special manner. In this case one single image covers the whole background. Details can be found in the sub-section Background Image Adjustment.

Next to the preview there are two sliders Brightness and Contrast to brighten the background image.and to change the contrast. Photos exposed normally have as a rule too strong colors to use them as a background image without brightness correction. Without changing the original file, you can increase the brightness and change the contrast of the background image here only for the output. When selecting an image file the sliders are set to a neutral position (Brightness to the left, Contrast to the center).

Hint 3: If you do not have a calibrated monitor, you must not rely on the appearance of very bright colors on the monitor. Then better make a small test printout using a normal color printer. Not calibrated color printers of today's construction represent the colors more reliably than not calibrated monitors.

The background settings and some of the settings on the Graphic Format, Box Colors and Box Format tabs depend on one another. Click the Info... button to open an information window with details.

Hint 4: If a small background image needs to be enlarged substantially for a large graphic, the image may appear distorted in the treeview because the original image pixels appear as large squares. To get a true sense for how the graphic will look, you will need to use the preview function. The background color should not contain any bright or dark colors, as this could make the graphic less readable. Light pastel colors are recommended. The family coat of arms is suitable for use as a symbol background image. If inserted with a very light tone, it can give the appearance of a watermark in the paper.

The output language of treeviews is set to English as default. A different language can be set by using the FamilyTreeFactory.lng output language file that contains the languages to be used. FamilyTreeFactory automatically reads the available languages from the file and lets you select the language from a dropdown list. This setting only applies to the output of treeviews and does not affect the user interface.

If the automatic file naming of treeview files is activated in the Program Options, Automatic Functions tab, and if you select here another output language than English, the names of the treeview files are supplemented with a language code automatically (e. g. DE for German). With that treeview files with the same graphic but different output languages stand recognizably directly behind each other in the Windows Explorer. In the same manner names for numerous other files are suggested in the save dialog including the language code of the output language of the treeview, for example export PDF files or EMF files for miniature overviews.

Hint 5: You can change language elements in the output language file yourself, add new languages or even adjust English elements to fit your needs. In the Tools menu, select Output Language File Editor.
