You can set print preferences here. You can also open the Printer Setup dialog directly from here to select the printer or paper type. In the Orientation and Number of Pages area, select Landscape or Portrait orientation. Specify the number of pages horizontal (left-to-right) and vertical (top-to-bottom). If you are printing to multiple pages, you can set a print overlap for both directions.

There are five methods of print justification of the graphic on paper. If the graphic is not adjusted to fit the paper size, it will be printed in its standard scale based on the display on the monitor (similar to standard word processing applications). If the paper format is not sufficient for this, a notification will be shown with the necessary number of pages horizontal and vertical. This means that you do not have to calculate how many pages are necessary. For initial orientation, we recommend fitting the graphic to the paper size. However, your printouts may be too small to read if you print an extensive treeview on Letter format paper.

On this tab, you can also set optional margins to allow for specified paper margins. This can be helpful for copies to be bound or for hand-written notes below the last, current generation. The justification of the graphic is oriented on the corresponding inside margins (non-printable margins of the printer or optional margins). The preview shows the margins and the justification of the graphic. However, the size of the graphic in this preview is not in the right scale. For the preview, the width/height ratio of the area within the inside margins is displayed. You can use the print preview function to see the exact scale of the margins and graphic.

When printing to multiple pages and with the print justification Print at top left and at equal box heights (see Box Format tab), you can also prevent boxes from being printed over the page breaks. Click on the button Don't Split Boxes to set the number of pages, the print overlaps and the optional margins so that the page breaks are located between the boxes. The necessary number of pages may increase substantially, as very large print overlaps may be necessary depending on the layout. After clicking on the button Don't Split Boxes, you may not make changes to any other treeview options. You should then close the dialog by clicking OK, check the result in the treeview and print preview and proceed to print.

If the print justification Center horizontally and vertically has been selected, and a graphic frame has been activated on the Graphic Format tab, you can click the button Expand Graphic Frame to cause the graphic frame to be expanded as far as possible. The graphic frame is normally closely drawn around the actual tree structure. If this option is selected, the margins of the graphic are expanded to the inside margins (non-printable margins of the printer or optional margins). If you do not wish any visible graphic frame, select the color white. After clicking on the button Expand Graphic Frame, you may not make changes to any other treeview options. You should then close the dialog by clicking OK, check the result in the treeview and print preview and proceed to print.

Note: The functions Don't Split Boxes and Expand Graphic Frame can only be performed manually, as they contradict FamilyTreeFactory's automatic dimension concept. Normally, the Automatic Width/Height feature determines the dimensions of the boxes and the graphic based on the Treeview Options. These functions use the reverse method. The settings for some options are based on the graphic. This explains why it is not possible to use these functions as a part of the Automatic Width/Height feature.

Cut lines make it easier to make straight cuts in roll paper and to make exact border cuts on multiple pages. The width and color of the lines can be set.

Hint 1: You can simulate a large format printer by placing multiple Letter size pages left-to-right and top-to-bottom to reproduce any desired large format. For example, you can place 4 Letter size landscape pages on top of each other to give you a height of 34 inch, which approximates a 36 inch roll on a large format printer. Or place 2 Letter size portrait pages on top of each other to give you a height of 22 inches, which approximates a 24 inch roll. The number of pages next to each other can also be used to simulate the length of the roll paper. You can now get an idea of how the printed image will look by printing a single Letter page. Enter print preview and activate the checkbox Page no., note the number of a page with a large number of person boxes, close the print preview and select File, Print... in the menu to print this one page. If you have selected a good print quality in the printer settings, you should see a cut-out of what the large format printer would print.

Hint 2: The print justification Use paper format for size lets you print any size graphic on any paper format. The size of the graphic is adjusted to fit the paper format, but the width/height ratio of the graphic remains unchanged. The resulting scale is displayed in the Print Preview Information Window. This scale is also valid for the font size. The print preview information window also shows the font size that will be printed. This will help you to decide if the text will be readable.

Hint 3: If you select the print justification Use paper format for size on this tab, and turn on the setting for Automatic Width/Height on the Automatic Width/Height tab, and activate the checkbox Use settings from Printer Page, and recreate the graphic with these settings, you will be sure to produce a graphic that fills the set paper format well. It is possible that the Automatic Width/Height feature cannot make the graphic narrow enough to fill the width/height ratio of the paper format. In this case, you can set a wider paper format or increase the number of left-to-right pages and repeat the process. The results can be easily checked in the Print Preview screen (with activated Margins).
