The Automatic Width/Height function optimizes the width and the height of the boxes and by this of the overall graphic during the creation of a tree. The Automatic Width/Height function ensures that on the one hand the paper size is filled out optimally and on the other hand all texts and photos, if any, fit in the boxes. The Automatic Width/Height function is activated with the checkbox Use Automatic Width/Height function.
The Automatic Width/Height function can pursue different aims: The Width/height ratio, the Absolute width or the Absolute height of the graphic. The desired aim has to be selected with the checkboxes on the left and the concrete set value (Set Width/Height Ratio or Set Width or Set Height) has to be entered in the corresponding spinedit field. For this, ensure that you match your settings with the Printer Setup settings and the options on the Printer Page tab, as the paper format and margins are set there. You can ensure that the settings are the same by activating the checkbox Use settings from Printer Page. More information about the width, the height and the width/height ratio of the specified paper format and the created graphic can be found under the Help/Info menu, Printer and Monitor Info..., and in the information window of Print Preview.
For exporting PDF files or graphic files, the printer page settings are not important. In this case, the checkboxes Use settings from Printer Page can be deactivated and the set values can be adjusted as desired. Exact information about the resulting dimensions can be found in the information window of the Export Preview.
The Automatic Width/Height function always adjusts the box width and the box height so that all texts and photos, if any, fit in the boxes exactly. Furthermore the boxes are not extended automatically even if this would be required for reaching the set value. Such cases are pointed to with corresponding messages; an extension of the boxes beyond the actual need can only be performed manually (switch off the Automatic Width/Height function and adjust the box width and height on the Box Format tab).
The automatic uses the flexibility of text breaks to change the box width and height contrarily and adjust the measurements of the graphic according to the active aim with that. The names and/or other text can be excepted from the text breaks; for this use the checkboxes Avoid text breaks in names and Avoid text breaks in other text. Caution: There is no more flexibility, if you mark both checkboxes; this will avoid every text break in the person boxes, and the Automatic Width/Height function will always find out the same result for every aim and every set value.
In the Method area you can choose between a faster but less exact method and a slower but very exact method. This option concerns only the aims Width/height ratio and Absolute height. At the less exact method the box width can be between 0 and 0.2 inch (5 mm) wider than ideally required. At the very exact method this deviation is between 0 and 0.02 inch (0.5 mm). The effect on the width of the graphic depends on the number of columns.
Aim: Width/Height Ratio of the Graphic
In principle, this aim is suitable for all printouts and file exports. However, you should use one of the two other aims if you want to set an absolute value for the width or the height; this can for example make sense if you want to use a large format printer with a certain roll width.
The automatic varies the box width, determines the box height required for the box contents and then compares the resulting width/height ratio of the graphic with the adjusted Set Width/Height Ratio. If the Set Width/Height Ratio has been exceeded by the narrowest graphic (meaning the narrowest graphic is too wide), a notification will be displayed that names the box and the element inside the box that is causing the problem. If a word is named here that is very long, you may be able to separate the word with a hyphen so that it can be split between lines. If the Set Width/Height Ratio has been fallen below by the widest graphic (meaning the widest graphic is too narrow), a corresponding notification will be displayed too. If there is no such extreme case, the automatic can adjust the width/height ratio to the Set Width/Height Ratio. As a rule, the automatic will not meet the Set Width/Height Ratio exactly, because the box height is adjusted not continuously but according to the need of lines (and photos, if any).
The specified Set Width/Height Ratio for normal single pages is usually about 130 to 140 % in landscape orientation and about 70 to 77 % in portrait orientation. You can set the ratio in the range from 1 % to 9999 %.
Aim: Absolute Width of the Graphic
This aim is particularly suitable for graphics which are very high and narrow and shall be printed on a roll paper printer. The graphic height will go in rolling direction and the graphic width will correspond approximately to the roll width. In practice you must subtract the not-printable margins of the printer from the roll width to get the correct Set Width of the graphic:

The automatic varies the box width (with and without text breaks), determines the box height required for the box contents and then compares the resulting width of the graphic with the adjusted Set Width. If the Set Width has been exceeded by the narrowest graphic (meaning the narrowest graphic is too wide), a notification will be displayed that names the box and the element inside the box that is causing the problem. If a word is named here that is very long, you may be able to separate the word with a hyphen so that it can be split between lines. If the Set Width has been fallen below by the widest graphic (meaning the widest graphic is too narrow), a corresponding notification will be displayed too. If there is no such extreme case, the automatic can adjust the width to the Set Width.
You can set the width in the range from 4 inch/100 mm to 4000 inch/100 m.
Aim: Absolute Height of the Graphic
This aim is particularly suitable for graphics which are very wide and low and shall be printed on a roll paper printer. The graphic width will go in rolling direction and the graphic height will correspond approximately to the roll width. In practice you must subtract the not-printable margins of the printer from the roll width to get the correct Set Height of the graphic:

The automatic varies the box width (with and without text breaks), determines the box height required for the box contents and then compares the resulting height of the graphic with the adjusted Set Height. If the Set Height has been exceeded by the lowest graphic (meaning the lowest graphic is too high), a notification will be displayed. If the Set Height has been fallen below by the highest graphic (meaning the highest graphic is too low), a corresponding notification will be displayed too. If there is no such extreme case, the automatic can adjust the height to the Set Height. As a rule, the automatic will not meet the Set Height exactly, because the box height is adjusted not continuously but according to the need of lines (and photos, if any).
You can set the height in the range from 4 inch/100 mm to 4000 inch/100 m.
Hint 1: At the aims Width/Height Ratio and Absolute Height, as a rule, the set values are not achieved exactly; this has been mentioned above. In such cases select the Print Justification Use paper format for size on the Printer Page tab to fill out the configured paper size optimally. |
Hint 2: Using the Automatic Width/Height function increases the processing time for creating trees, but it is still recommended that you use the feature and make any necessary corrections by hand afterwards. For this, deactivate the checkbox Use Automatic Width/Height function and change the box width and height manually on the Box Format tab. If reducing the size of a box does not allow text to fit in the box completely, this will be recognized before the graphic is printed or exported and you will be asked if you want to cancel the operation. |
Hint 3: For using the Automatic Width/Height function, see also Hint 3 in the section Printer Page tab. |
