On this tab, you can select the fonts used for text and symbols in boxes with the standard Windows font dialog. Here, only installed TrueType fonts are available. Names can be set to be a certain number of points larger than in the font selected in the font dialog. In addition, you can specify whether names in the boxes should be output in bold, regardless of the style selected in the font dialog. Furthermore, surnames can be output in capital letters; this applies to the output of maiden names, too.

With three buttons the horizontal justification of text in boxes can be adjusted to the left, to the center or to the right. To the left and to the right could look good if the photos are arranged on the left or on the right.

In addition, the symbols for the text characters for 'Born', 'Baptized'. 'Married, 'Divorced', 'Not married', 'Deceased', 'Killed in action' and 'Buried' can be specified. For normal fonts, the characters *, ~, X, x, (Alt + 0134), +, (Alt + 0129) are appropriate. The characters can be selected from a dropdown list after specifying the font. The special characters contained in different fonts can be seen using the Windows program Character Map (CharMap.exe). Unicode is not supported for symbols, because a dropdown list containing up to 65.000 characters is impracticable.

We recommend using the symbol font installed with FamilyTreeFactory, 'Genealog-Symbols'. This "font" does not contain any characters and is made up of various symbols for different purposes. If the font 'Genealog-Symbols' is used to produce a marriage symbol in the form of a sideways 8, you can mark the checkbox Symbol for separated marriage or divorce: vertical line through marriage symbol to cross out the marriage symbol with a vertical line. This symbol is also used for divorce data in separate line, if this option has been selected on the Box Content tab, list Output Personal Data, Special Format Options, Marriage data.

The relative vertical position of the symbols can be changed with the position correction function. However, this is not usually necessary.

The preview shows a typeface example or individual characters. The selection can be made automatically.

Note: These symbols cannot be clearly seen on a normal monitor at the standard font size of 10 to 12 points, as is usually the case for symbol fonts. You may be able to improve your view by activating the Windows setting Smooth display fonts under Display Properties/Effects. Printed versions and exports to PDF or EMF files are always exact representations, as they can provide higher resolution than available on monitors or are saved as vector graphics with no set resolution.
